Best WordPress Quiz Plugins in 2026

Most WordPress quiz plugins are built for one of two jobs, and buying the wrong one wastes a licence. A lead-generation quiz sorts a visitor into a result and captures an email. An assessment scores answers and records who passed. Tools that are good at one are usually mediocre at the other. Roundups that shuffle them into a single top-ten list are why people end up paying for a course platform to run a personality quiz. Here is the split, with real prices.

Quick verdict

  • Best overall for lead-generation quizzes: Thrive Quiz Builder. Branching logic and result-based segmentation that feeds straight into an opt-in, if you can justify the Suite price.
  • Best free: Forminator. The free plugin builds both knowledge quizzes and personality quizzes, with no response cap and nothing hosted elsewhere.
  • Best for scored assessments: Quiz and Survey Master. Twelve-plus question types, score-based result pages and grading in the free version.
  • Skip it if: you were about to install WP Quiz. Its listing has been closed since April 2025 over a security issue and it has not been tested past WordPress 5.9.16.
  • Our call: start free, and only pay once you have a quiz people finish. The licence is rarely the expensive part.

The two jobs a quiz plugin can do

Before you compare a single price, work out which of these you are actually building. It decides everything else.

  • The lead-generation quiz. Anonymous visitor, five to eight questions, a result page that flatters them, and an email field. Success is measured in subscribers and segments. The question engine barely matters; the result page and the opt-in are the product.
  • The assessment. A known user, a scored attempt, a pass mark, attempt limits, and a record you can look up later. Success is measured in defensible results. Here the question types, the timer and the reporting are the product, and the result page is nearly irrelevant.

The overlap is smaller than it looks. An assessment tool will happily run a personality quiz, but it will not segment your list. A lead-generation tool will happily score answers, but it will not stop someone retaking the test until they pass. And if the quiz has to sit inside a course, award a certificate and gate the next lesson, you are not shopping for a quiz plugin at all. You want one of the WordPress LMS plugins, which include quizzing as a feature of something larger.

Lead-generation quiz plugins

These four exist to turn a visitor into a subscriber. Judge them on the result page, the opt-in placement and where the email goes afterwards.

Thrive Quiz Builder

Thrive Quiz Builder landing page with the headline Quizzes Aren't Just for Silly Fun above a purple collage of quiz screens on laptops, tablets and phones

Thrive Quiz Builder is the one built for the funnel rather than for the questions. You lay the quiz out on a visual flowchart, branch on earlier answers, and route people to different result pages, which then hand different tags to Thrive Leads. That last step is the whole reason to buy it: a quiz that segments is worth several times a quiz that only entertains.

  • Key features: visual flow builder with branching, five evaluation types (right or wrong, percentage, number, personality, survey), result-page splitting, and completion stats that show which question people quit on.
  • Price: Thrive’s own pricing page lists it only inside Thrive Suite at $299 a year for up to 5 sites, stating that renewals are at the full $599 a year. Quarterly billing is $149, which is $596 across four quarters, so it saves almost nothing over a renewal year.
  • Best for: bloggers and course sellers who will use at least two other Thrive plugins and want quiz results driving list segments.
  • Skip it if: you want one quiz. Nobody should pay $299 for a single trivia post, and the renewal is the highest of any plan verified in the table above.

Quiz Cat

Isometric illustration of three quiz answer bubbles marked with a cross, a question mark and a tick, sitting above a stack of paper with coins and an open book around it

Quiz Cat does the BuzzFeed-style personality quiz and very little else, which is the point. The free plugin on WordPress.org carries 4,000-plus active installs and a 4.7 rating from 35 reviews, and it has been tested against WordPress 7.1, which puts it ahead of most of the viral-quiz crowd on maintenance alone.

  • Key features: image-led questions, unlimited questions, shuffled answers, custom result messages, and share buttons on the result card.
  • Price: free on WordPress.org. Pro starts at $69 a year for one site on the Quiz Cat pricing page, then $99 for three sites and $149 for unlimited. It auto-renews at the same rate, and it is the cheapest paid option in the table above.
  • Best for: a content site that wants a shareable personality quiz live this afternoon.
  • Skip it if: you need scoring rules, question banks, attempt limits or any record of who took what.

Opinion Stage

Opinion Stage homepage with the headline Create Quizzes, Surveys, and Forms That Get Better Results beside sample image-based quiz cards showing trainers and a portrait

Opinion Stage is a hosted service with a WordPress plugin bolted on, and the distinction matters more than the feature list. The quiz lives on their servers; your site embeds it. That buys you polish and analytics you would otherwise build yourself, and it costs you ownership of the data and a bill that scales with traffic.

  • Key features: visual conversational quizzes, image answers, AI-assisted creation, lead capture, and drop-off reporting on the higher tier. The WordPress plugin has 6,000-plus installs and 277 ratings.
  • Price: the free plan caps you at 25 responses a month. Pro is $25 a month billed yearly, which is $300 a year, for 1,000 responses a month, or $32 month to month, which is $384 a year. Business at $79 a month billed yearly, $948 a year, buys 10,000 responses and removes the branding. All figures from the Opinion Stage pricing page.
  • Best for: marketing teams who want hosted analytics and will not be maintaining the thing themselves.
  • Skip it if: your traffic is spiky. Response-metered pricing punishes exactly the quiz that works, and 25 free responses is a demo, not a plan.

Forminator

Forminator is the answer to the question nobody in a paid roundup wants asked: do you need to spend anything at all? It is free, it has 600,000-plus active installs and a 4.8 rating from more than 2,100 reviews, and its WordPress.org listing covers both knowledge quizzes and personality quizzes in the free build, tested up to WordPress 7.1.

  • Key features: knowledge and personality quiz types, conditional logic, submission storage in your own database, and the same builder handles contact forms and polls, so it earns its place beyond the quiz.
  • Price: free. A Pro tier exists but is sold through a WPMU DEV membership rather than as a standalone licence.
  • Best for: anyone testing whether a quiz works before spending money on one. It is also a sensible pick if you would otherwise install a second plugin for forms; see our roundup of WordPress form plugins for that comparison.
  • Skip it if: you want a designed result page out of the box. Forminator’s output is functional, not beautiful, and you will be writing CSS.

Assessment and scored-quiz plugins

These are for tests with right answers. Judge them on question types, grading, attempt control and what you can export when someone asks for a record.

Quiz and Survey Master

Quiz and Survey Master promotional banner showing a multiple-choice quiz asking what the abbreviation NASA stands for, with Previous and Next buttons and a circular score dial reading 53

Quiz and Survey Master is the default answer for scored quizzes you want to own outright. Version 11.2.5 shipped in August 2026 to 40,000-plus active installs, holding a 4.7 rating across 1,281 reviews on its WordPress.org listing. Crucially, the free version is not a teaser: score-based result pages, grading and lead capture are all in it.

  • Key features: twelve-plus question types including fill-in-the-blank, file upload and open-ended, points and percentage grading, per-score result pages, timers, and templated result emails.
  • Price: free, with paid tiers on the Quiz and Survey Master pricing page at $149 a year for one site, $199 for three, $249 for ten and $299 for the All Access bundle. Lifetime licences start at $447. No introductory discount is advertised, so treat the yearly figure as the ongoing cost.
  • Best for: exams, knowledge checks and surveys where the answers must stay on your server.
  • Skip it if: you need enrolment, drip content or certificates tied to lessons. That is a course platform’s job.

AYS Quiz Maker

AYS Quiz Maker is the one most roundups under-rate. Its free version allows unlimited quizzes and unlimited questions with real scoring, timers and randomisation, and it carries a 4.9 rating from 597 reviews across 20,000-plus installs, tested to WordPress 7.1 and updated constantly.

  • Key features: radio, checkbox, dropdown, text, number and date question types free, plus trivia, personality, scored and true-or-false quiz modes. Certificates, multi-page flows, image answers, leaderboards and email integrations are paid.
  • Price: the free plugin is unrestricted on quiz and question count. The vendor’s pricing page was not reachable at the check date, so no paid figure is quoted here. Confirm the licence cost at checkout before you plan around it.
  • Best for: exam-style quizzes on no budget, where a generous free tier beats a polished paid one.
  • Skip it if: a certificate is a day-one requirement, since that sits behind a licence whose price you will need to check yourself.

HD Quiz

HDQuiz banner reading the easiest quiz maker for WordPress next to an image quiz asking what is the largest animal with giraffe and elephant photo answers

HD Quiz is a small, well-kept plugin with an unusually good review record: 4.9 stars from 145 reviews and not a single one or two-star rating on its WordPress.org listing, across 6,000-plus installs. It inherits your theme’s fonts and colours by design, which is why it never looks bolted on.

  • Key features: image and GIF answers, timers, tooltips for hints, scoring, social sharing, and accessibility work that most quiz plugins skip entirely.
  • Price: free. A separate styling add-on is sold by the developer.
  • Best for: a trivia quiz inside a blog post that should look like it belongs to the theme.
  • Skip it if: you need lead capture, CRM integration or exportable attempt records.

Formidable Forms

Formidable Forms homepage showing icons for calculator, payment, registration, contact and survey forms with a 4.7 star rating badge from 850 reviews

Formidable treats a quiz as a form with a grading rule, which is exactly right if you already run Formidable and exactly wrong as a reason to start. Scoring, letter grades and percentage results come out of the same builder that handles your contact forms and calculators.

  • Key features: automatic or custom grading, results by total, percentage or letter grade, score in the confirmation message or the notification email, and the calculation engine behind it all.
  • Price: quizzes and surveys sit on the Business tier. The Formidable pricing page shows $199.50 for the first year and states that renewals are at full price, which is $399. That is an exact doubling in year two, so budget for $399, not $199.50.
  • Best for: sites already licensed for Formidable Business or Elite, and for quizzes that need arithmetic rather than a question bank.
  • Skip it if: the quiz is the only reason to buy. Free plugins above do scored quizzes without the licence, and if you want the form builder itself, compare it against the field in our multistep form plugins guide first.

LearnDash

LearnDash homepage headline calling it the most powerful learning management system for WordPress, beside a course card for Starting a Photo Business with an Enrol button

LearnDash has the strongest quiz engine on this page, and most readers should not buy it. It assumes a logged-in learner inside a course: question banks, essay grading, sorting and matching questions, attempt limits, multi-page quizzes and certificates on pass. All of that is wasted on an anonymous visitor taking a personality test.

  • Key features: single choice, multiple choice, free text, fill-in-the-blank, matching, sorting, essay and survey question types, question banks, randomisation, attempt limits, timed quizzes and media in questions.
  • Price: Essentials $259 a year, Pro $399, Elite $599, per the LearnDash pricing page, which states the licence renews annually and covers unlimited courses and learners. The quiz builder is in every tier; the AI quiz builder is Pro and above.
  • Best for: graded assessments attached to paid courses, where the record of who passed has commercial consequences.
  • Skip it if: you have no courses. And if you are weighing it against the obvious rival, our LearnDash against LifterLMS comparison is the right page, not this one.

Three quiz plugins to leave alone

These still appear in current roundups. All three failed a basic check against their own listings on 31 August 2026.

  • WP Quiz. The WordPress.org listing has been closed since April 2025 over a security issue. The last release, 2.0.10, was tested only to WordPress 5.9.16, and reviewers report a fatal error on activation with modern WordPress. It is not downloadable and should not be installed.
  • ARI Stream Quiz. Last updated a year ago, tested to WordPress 6.8.8, and the listing carries WordPress.org’s warning that it has not been tested with the latest three major releases. Recent reviews report unanswered support mail and a broken checkout on the vendor site.
  • WordPress Viral Quiz (BuzzFeed Quiz Builder). The CodeCanyon item page was not reachable at the check date and the product does not surface in CodeCanyon’s own search results. Confirm it is still sold before you plan a project around it.

What most quiz plugin roundups get wrong

  • They quote the intro price. Formidable Business is $199.50 for year one and $399 after. Thrive Suite is $299 and then $599. A roundup that prints only the first number understates the two-year cost of both by roughly a third.
  • They rank dead plugins. Three of the entries in the original version of this very post were closed, stale or missing from their marketplace. Install counts and star ratings are cheap to copy and expensive to trust; the last-updated date and the tested-up-to version are the two fields worth reading.
  • They ignore where the leads go. A quiz that collects 400 emails into a WordPress database has collected nothing. The email tool is the other half of the purchase, and it usually costs more than the quiz plugin does. Sort that out first with our newsletter plugins comparison, and think about the offer on the result page while you are there, because that is where conversion rate is actually won or lost.
  • They never mention the performance cost. Several quiz plugins enqueue their scripts and stylesheets on every page rather than only where a quiz appears. That shows up in Interaction to Next Paint, which Google treats as good at 200 milliseconds or under at the 75th percentile. An image-heavy quiz also shifts layout as answer images load, so give the images explicit dimensions; our notes on avoiding layout shift and speed optimisation cover the fixes.
  • They skip the legal bit. A quiz answer tied to an email address is personal data. You need a lawful basis, a notice at the point of capture and a way to delete a record on request, which is easier with a self-hosted plugin than a hosted one. Our GDPR compliance guide covers the mechanics.

A short decision path

  • Building your first quiz and unsure it will work? Forminator, free, today.
  • Want a shareable personality quiz on a content site? Quiz Cat, free to start, $69 a year if you need the Pro result pages.
  • Want quiz results to segment your email list? Thrive Quiz Builder, but only if two other Thrive plugins will get used.
  • Running a scored test or survey you need to own? Quiz and Survey Master, free, paid only when you want reporting and integrations.
  • Already paying for Formidable Business? Use what you have; do not add a plugin.
  • Quiz has to award a certificate inside a course? Stop reading quiz roundups and buy a course platform.
  • Traffic is unpredictable and the quiz might go big? Avoid response-metered hosted pricing, or budget for the tier above.

Whatever you pick, treat the result page as a landing page. The mechanics in our guide to monetising a WordPress blog apply to it like any other page, and a popup on the result screen usually beats an inline form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a lead-gen quiz and an assessment?

A lead-generation quiz sorts a visitor into a result and captures an email. An assessment scores answers and records who passed. Lead-gen tools optimise the result page and the opt-in. Assessment tools optimise question types, attempt limits and reporting. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake here.

Do I need a paid quiz plugin at all?

Usually not for a first quiz. Forminator, Quiz and Survey Master, AYS Quiz Maker and HD Quiz all build working quizzes for nothing. Pay once you hit a specific wall: certificates, conditional logic, multi-page flows, or a CRM integration you will genuinely use.

Which quiz plugin is cheapest?

Quiz Cat, at $69 a year for one site, is the cheapest paid option in the comparison above, and it renews at the same $69. Formidable Forms renews at $399 and Thrive Suite at $599, so the gap widens sharply in year two. Prices checked August 2026.

Can I use my LMS for a marketing quiz?

You can, but it is awkward. LearnDash quizzes assume a logged-in learner inside a course, and an anonymous visitor taking a personality quiz will not enrol. Use a lead-generation tool for the funnel and keep the LMS for graded coursework that needs a record.

Will a quiz plugin slow my site down?

It can, if it loads scripts and styles on every page rather than only where the quiz appears. Watch Interaction to Next Paint, which Google treats as good at 200 milliseconds or under at the 75th percentile. Test the page carrying the quiz, not your homepage.

Are BuzzFeed-style viral quizzes still worth building?

For lead capture, yes. For traffic, far less than a decade ago, because social platforms throttle outbound links. A personality quiz now earns its keep through the emails it collects and the segments it creates, not through shares. Judge it on list growth.

What happens to quiz answers under GDPR?

Quiz responses tied to an email address are personal data. You need a lawful basis, a privacy notice at the point of capture, and a way to delete a record on request. Self-hosted plugins keep the data on your own server; hosted tools add a processor to the chain.

Is WP Quiz safe to install?

No. The WP Quiz listing on WordPress.org has been closed since April 2025 over a security issue, its last release was tested only to WordPress 5.9.16, and reviewers report fatal errors on activation. Roundups still recommend it. Do not install it.

How many questions should a lead-generation quiz have?

Five to eight, with the email request on the result step rather than the first one. Longer quizzes drop off hard on mobile, and every extra question costs completions. If you need thirty questions, you are building an assessment and should use an assessment tool.

Our call

Install Forminator and build the quiz for free this week. Most quiz projects die at the idea stage, and the ones that survive teach you which paid feature you actually need, which is never the one you would have guessed.

When you do pay: for a lead-generation quiz that has to segment a list, Thrive Quiz Builder is the only tool here designed for that job, and it is worth $299 only if the rest of Thrive Suite gets used. For a scored assessment you need to own, Quiz and Survey Master is the pick, and its free tier will carry most sites further than the licence page suggests. If the quiz belongs inside a course with a certificate at the end, buy an LMS instead and treat the quiz engine as a feature you already paid for.

And whatever a roundup tells you, check the plugin’s last-updated date before you install it. That single field would have removed three entries from this page.
